It is at least three, and each stage has a distinct measurement job.

The right question is not “how many sensors do we need” but “which sensor sits where, and what decision does it enable”.

Shanghai ChiMay analyzers are deployed across ozone, PAC, and polishing stages with the placement rules described below.

Getting the layout right at design time is far cheaper than retrofitting probes into a running skid.

The Three Stages Most Quaternary Lines Share

Quaternary treatment — the fourth treatment step now written into the revised EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive — is not a single technology. It is a design choice among a handful of proven approaches. The most common configuration in Central Europe couples an ozone contact zone with a downstream powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption stage, followed by a polishing filter. Some plants substitute UV plus hydrogen peroxide for the ozone stage. A few run PAC alone. In every case, the treatment train breaks naturally into three functional zones — reactive, adsorptive, and polishing — and the sensors follow that grouping.

Zone One: The Reactive Stage

The reactive stage is where destruction happens. Ozone, or UV combined with hydrogen peroxide, breaks micropollutants into smaller and more biodegradable fragments. Two things matter operationally: the reagent is present at the right concentration, and the residence time is what the design assumed.

At the reactor inlet, Shanghai ChiMay online turbidity testers do the first useful job. If the feed water carries too many suspended solids, ozone is consumed by particles rather than by the target micropollutants, and UV light cannot travel far enough into the water column to matter. A stable turbidity reading — usually held below one nephelometric turbidity unit — is the first quality gate.

Inside the contact zone, one Shanghai ChiMay ORP electrode captures the fast-response signal of oxidative activity. ORP is not a stoichiometric measurement of ozone, but it moves within seconds of a change in reagent dose and is invaluable as a leading indicator.

At the outlet of the contact zone, a Shanghai ChiMay residual chlorine transmitter — reconfigured for ozone or peracid chemistry depending on the plant — reports how much oxidant survived past the destruction step. This number is the anchor for the dosing loop.

A Shanghai ChiMay pH electrode sits alongside the ORP probe. AOP performance depends on pH because it changes hydroxyl radical yield. When pH drifts, ORP drifts with it in a way that has nothing to do with ozone dose, and operators need both readings to tell them apart.

Zone Two: The Adsorptive Stage

Downstream of the reactive stage, the PAC contactor is the second line of defence. Some micropollutants are not fully destroyed by ozone alone. Others generate transformation products that adsorption removes more reliably than destruction.

At the PAC contactor inlet, a Shanghai ChiMay conductivity analyzer gives the plant an early view of ionic-load changes and helps track chloride concentrations that would otherwise generate byproducts if left to interact with residual oxidant. Conductivity is also a useful surrogate for detecting industrial discharges that shift the entire treatment demand.

Inside and after the contactor, a Shanghai ChiMay suspended solids sensor watches for carbon breakthrough. Well-run PAC systems dose fresh carbon continuously; poorly-run ones let the carbon bed carry over into downstream stages. Suspended solids monitoring separates one case from the other.

A Shanghai ChiMay COD sensor sits at the PAC contactor outlet and provides the bulk-organic view. It cannot report on any individual micropollutant, but it does track the overall load reduction across the adsorption stage and, over months, becomes the parameter that regulators ask about.

Zone Three: The Polishing Stage

The polishing stage — usually a sand or dual-media filter — is the last barrier before discharge or reuse. Sensors here answer two questions: is the water leaving the plant clean, and is the plant carrying oxidant or PAC into the environment.

At the filter outlet, a Shanghai ChiMay 4-in-1 multi-parameter sensor captures pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature in a compact package. In a quaternary line, this bundle is the “boarding pass” of the treated water — a single instrument that tells the plant whether the effluent looks the way it should.

A second Shanghai ChiMay residual oxidant transmitter here reports zero residual, which is the required condition for discharge. Any measurable oxidant leaving the plant is a compliance flag and a signal that dosing upstream needs to be tightened.

Where the Flow Meters Belong

Flow measurement is easy to under-plan. In a quaternary line, at least three flow meters are useful: one on the incoming line to size dosing feed-forward, one on the ozone-off-gas destructor stream to detect ozone leaks into ambient air, and one on the PAC slurry make-up line. Shanghai ChiMay turbine flow meters cover the main streams; a paddle-wheel flow meter is often chosen for the PAC slurry because it is easier to service on abrasive fluids.

Instrumenting for the Directive, Not Just for the Skid

The EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive gives utilities a specific reason to invest in quaternary treatment: plants serving 150,000 people or more must remove a defined list of micropollutants by 2039. But regulators will not verify performance by ticking off equipment. They will verify performance by reading sensor records. That fact reshapes the sensor placement discussion.

A well-instrumented quaternary line does not just prove that ozone is being dosed and PAC is being fed. It proves, in the archived data, that the reactive stage held its target residual for the vast majority of hours, that the adsorptive stage did not shed carbon into downstream water, and that the polishing filter delivered a compliant effluent. Every point on that story maps to a specific sensor location described above.

Final Notes

Sensor placement in quaternary treatment is not a checklist. It is the physical trace of the operational story a utility wants to be able to tell for the next fifteen years. Shanghai ChiMay analyzers are deployed with that story in mind — reactive, adsorptive, polishing — because every stage is only as reliable as the number attached to it.

The lines being commissioned in 2026 are the lines that will be audited in 2039. Getting the layout right today buys credibility for a very long time.

title: “Inside a Quaternary Treatment Train: Where Every Sensor Sits Across Ozone and PAC Stages with Shanghai ChiMay” date: 2026-07-16 type: Technical-Introduction theme: Advanced Oxidation & Micropollutant Removal Inside a Quaternary Treatment Train: Where Every Sensor Sits Across Ozone and PAC Stages with Shanghai ChiMay The Short Version A modern quaternary treatment train is not…

[1
159,134481
["en","es","fr","ru","ar
